My Teaching Adventure in Shenzhen

2023-10-24

In late August, I embarked on a new chapter of my life - moving to China to start my job as a pre-school teacher. The transition was an exciting mix of challenges, discoveries, and rewarding experiences that have made my journey so far incredibly enriching.

As a first-time expatriate in China, the visa procedures and paperwork were a bit daunting. However, the unwavering support from my recruiting agency and my agents, Daisy and Hannah, made the process smooth and manageable. A special thanks to them for their patience and guidance throughout this process.

The moment I landed crossed the border from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, Daisy was there to greet me and help me settle into my new life. From getting a local SIM card to introducing me to practical apps, her assistance was invaluable. This immediate support made an immense difference and helped me feel less overwhelmed.

Having grown up in a small village in Scotland, the first few weeks in China were a whirlwind of new experiences. Starting my job at a bilingual IB kindergarten, learning the intricacies of the school system, finding an apartment, and acclimating to my new surroundings kept me on my toes. I was moving from the South Korean public school system to teaching the youngest students, mostly aged 2, which was a significant shift. However, the joy of teaching these young minds and seeing their progress made every challenge worthwhile.

On top of my daily teaching, I run an after-school art club once a week. This has been a brilliant way to gain experience in an area of teaching that I particularly love. I also get to spend time with some students from the older classes, which provides a nice balance.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is witnessing how quickly my students absorb the English language. Their eagerness and capacity to learn are truly astounding and serve as a constant reminder of why I chose to be a teacher.

My school is a vibrant place with constant events and activities going on. I had the honour of hosting our mid-autumn festival, which was a delightful experience, if slightly nerve-wracking. We are currently gearing up for our expo, parents' performance, and Halloween event, keeping us busy and excited.

Living in Shenzhen has been an adventure in itself. The city offers a perfect blend of modern amenities and rich cultural experiences. The convenience of life here, the unique neighbourhoods to explore, and the delightful food have made my stay enjoyable and comfortable. During the mid-autumn holiday, I also had the opportunity to travel to Hainan. The trip was an unforgettable experience, and I am eager to explore more of what China has to offer.

In conclusion, my move to China has been a journey of growth, learning, and wonderful experiences. It has not only enriched me professionally but also allowed me to appreciate a new culture, meet lovely people, and explore beautiful places. I am excited about continuing my adventure here and eagerly look forward to what the future holds.
